Prerequisites: You must have a proper healthcare background to become an AHA Instructor, all candidates must show proof of this background prior to the in-person course.
Step #1 Discipline Specific AHA Provider Card
Each candidate is required to have a current AHA provider card for the discipline they are seeking instructor status in before enrolling in the Instructor training course. For example, a candidate who wants to be a BLS Instructor must be certified as a BLS Healthcare Provider. The provider certifications must be current at the time of the instructor class. Expired certification cannot be accepted. A Red Cross certification or other non-AHA certifications are not accepted when becoming an AHA CPR Instructor.
Step #2 Training Center Approval
Every AHA Instructor candidate is required to align with an authorized AHA Training Center or Training site and have the authorization document signed by the Training Center Coordinator prior to the instructor course.
Step #3 Online Instructor Essentials, Instructor and Provider Manual (purchase links provided in your confirmation email)
After completing the required prerequisites, instructor candidates must purchase and complete the AHA Online Instructor Essentials Course, which is a separate fee paid directly to the American Heart Association (AHA).
In addition, candidates are required to obtain the appropriate AHA Instructor Manual, which is also purchased separately through the AHA. Candidates must have both the Provider Manual and the Instructor Manual for the discipline in which they are seeking instructor certification while completing the Online Instructor Essentials course.
On the first day of the in-person instructor course, candidates must bring the following materials:
-
Certificate of completion for the AHA Online Instructor Essentials Course
-
AHA Instructor Manual for the selected discipline
-
AHA Provider Manual for the selected discipline
Failure to bring these materials may result in a delay or cancellation of your participation in the instructor course.
Step #4
The 2-day course agenda.
Day 1 8am-11:30am Administrative review
12pm-4pm BLS Instructor (only if being certified)
Day 2 8am-11:30pm ACLS Instructor (only if being certified)
12pm-4pm PALS Instructor (only if being certified)
If you are only taking one of the Instructor courses, you are required to attend the first day for the Administrative review session and then attend the other instructor course(s) of your choosing. The Training Center for this course may choose to add additional content to the agenda that could potentially increase the class time. During the course, Instructor Candidates will be placed in the position of leading a group of students for mock AHA course scenarios to help develop their teaching and leading abilities.
Step #5
After the course, the Instructor Candidates will then audit/co-teach a course with another approved Instructor. The Faculty Instructor will evaluate the Instructor Candidate and complete the Instructor Monitoring Tool during the course. This review course must be completed within 6 months of taking the instructor course.
Step #6
When the candidate has successfully completed all aspects of the Instructor course, the Instructor Candidate will be issued their Instructor certifications by their Training Center and allowed to lead AHA provider course(s).
